Songs That Shouldn’t (But Probably Will) Be in the Beatles: Rock Band

May 22nd, 2009

Twist And Shout
Why It Shouldn’t Be In: As great as this song is, it would be pretty easy in a Guitar-Hero-style game. It pretty much repeats the same thing over and over again until the solo which, I think, also wouldn’t be very difficult to play Guitar-Hero-style.
Why It Will Be In: It was one of the Beatles’s biggest hits from that era, and it’s one of their most recognizable songs even if they didn’t write it.

A Hard Day’s Night
Why It Shouldn’t Be In: Aside from the really cool solo, which I think would be great in a Rock Band game, the lead guitar does just about nothing in this song.
Why It Will Be In: They’ll probably put this in just for the guitar solo. I can’t think of a more famous Beatles guitar solo. Also, it might be kind of cool to have the player (on Expert skill level) hold down all five of the guitar buttons to hold down that famous opening chord. This would be mildly challenging because you only have four fingers to play with.

Help!
Why It Shouldn’t Be In: It has pretty much no lead guitar part.
Why It Will Be In: Again, it’s recognizable; people like this song. Also, they’ll probably throw it in to utilize the microphone: this song has one of the better vocal parts.

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Why It Shouldn’t Be In: It only has guitar parts at the beginning and at the end; the rest of the song is pretty much just the horns.
Why It Will Be In: It would still be the best song from the album of the same name to be included. They’ll probably want to put in a song from this album because it’s one of their most famous albums, and they don’t have many choices – what are they going to choose: “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!”? “A Day in the Life”? Those songs have even less guitar parts than this one.

The Solution?…
It has already been announced that this game is going to include previously unreleased and/or/morphed with new material. The main problem with all the above songs is that they don’t have guitar parts throughout the song. What the makers of the game could do is put all of those solos into some sort of a medley song, and all their problems would be solved.

Songs That Should (But Won’t) Be in the Beatles: Rock Band

May 10th, 2009

The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill
Why It Should Be In: First of all this song features one of the coolest, fastest riffs as its intro. It would be very challenging to play that Guitar-Hero style. Also, most Guitar Hero/Rock Band games feature songs by girl bands so the game appeals to both genders. This is the only Beatles song to feature female lead vocal (even if it’s just for one line).
Why It Won’t Be In: This song is pretty obscure; you don’t see it on a lot of “greatest Beatles songs” lists. Also, apart from the intro, the only thing the lead guitar does is strumming.

Because
Why It Should Be In: This song is actually played primarily on an organ, but it can transfer over for Rock Band. It features really cool three-part harmony; I’ve read that some releases of the Beatles: Rock Band will come with three USB microphones to utilize all those notable Beatle harmonies. (Also notable: the Wii only has two USB ports, and yet three USB microphones will be packaged with the game.)
Why It Won’t Be In: This song features no drum track or bass track, and a second guitar could be added (since there actually is one in the recording), but it would only be playing the exact same thing as the first guitar.

Within You Without You
Why It Should Be In: They should’ve hired me to work on the development of this game because I have a really cool idea on this one: the entire song is built on a droning C-note on a sitar and occasionally the sitar plays little riffs, plays in unison with the vocals, and there’s even a solo in there. For the game, the player would have to hold down the green button throughout the entire song while the other four buttons would work out the rest of the song. It would probably be one of the more challenging songs in the game.
Why It Won’t Be In: This song doesn’t actually feature a guitar. (They should really bundle a sitar controller for this game.) Also, it doesn’t have enough consumer appeal; it’s not really the kind of song someone whistles to themself on the subway. Plus the lyrics are kind of deep. The only Beatle who actually plays on this track is George Harrison; they’d have to animate sixteen little computer animated session musicians. Last of all, it would be difficult to somehow morph the tabla percussion part into a playable form on the Rock Band drum kit.

Revolution 9
Why It Should Be In: In Guitar Hero: World Tour, during the guitar breaks the lead vocalist could do whatever they want into the mic without losing points. That’s the kind of thing I’m thinking with Revolution 9, only every instrument can do whatever they want for eight minutes. This would make a good bonus track.
Why It Won’t Be In: Number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine.

The Complete Beatles Collection

April 8th, 2009

I am now the owner of every Beatles album officially released (which I consider to be every album on this page). From Please Please Me to Love and everything in between – it’s all on my iPod.
Two-hundred-twenty-one songs were released by the Beatles between the years 1962-70, 1995-96. While scrolling through the list of venerable songs, one word seems to summarize the prevalent idea that the Beatles were trying to get across: love. Interestingly, the first word of their first single (“Love Me Do”) and the last word of their last single (“Real Love”) is “love.” “All you need is love”… “have you heard the word is love?”

Statistics:
Amount of songs released by the Beatles on every album, including post-breakup: 588
Amount of songs released by the Beatles on every album, not including post-breakup: 221
Amount of GBs every Beatles song will take up on your iPod: 1.95
Amount of time it would take to listen to every song: 1 day, 2 hours, 23 minutes, 43 seconds
Album most likely to show up in “Shuffle”: Live at the BBC (69 songs)
Album least likely to show up in “Shuffle”: Let It Be (12 songs)
Song most likely to show up in “Shuffle”: “Get Back” with seven different copies/versions
Number of songs featuring Lennon on lead vocals: 133
Number of songs featuring McCartney on lead vocals: 124
Number of songs featuring Harrison on lead vocals: 48
Number of songs featuring Starr on lead vocals: 14
Number of songs credited to Lennon/McCartney: 161
Number of songs credited to Harrison: 23
Number of songs credited to Starkey: 2
Number of songs credited to Lennon/McCartney/Harrison/Starkey: 5
Number of cover songs released: 24

You’re probably thinking, “Who cares? What a waste of precious megabytes.” If you’re thinking that, you are so right. Who needs seven different versions of “Get Back” or five “Eight Days A Week”s or even three “Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey”s? Well, I don’t know who needs those things, but if I ever meet ‘em, I’ll have it all in my pocket.
