48 Hours of Non-Stop Music

May 19th, 2009

I hit an iPod landmark the other day when I bought The Concert for Bangladesh album. My iPod Touch now holds two solid days of music… if I wanted to, and had nothing else going on, I could listen to music for forty-eight hours non-stop (plus an extra ten minutes, to boot). I have 905 songs that take up 4.39 GB of my 8 GB total.
Here is a break-down of the amounts of different musical groups I have on my iPod currently:

Band Name Songs Time (hrs:min) MB
The Beatles 588 26:24 2000
Pink Floyd 45 3:30 411
George Harrison 41 3:02 351
Bob Dylan 40 3:17 383
The Rutles 36 1:40 94
John Lennon 21 1:21 121
The Blues Brothers 19 1:08 64
The Rolling Stones 13 0:56 99
The Traveling Wilburys 12 0:42 86
Simon & Garfunkel 11 0:36 371
Aerosmith 10 0:38 74
Paul McCartney 9 0:33 58
Led Zeppelin 8 0:42 72
Plastic Ono Band 8 0:40 78
Eric Clapton 6 0:29 32
Cream 5 0:19 18
Chuck Berry 4 0:11 15
The Band 3 0:11 16

You can compare this graph to the one I made several months ago after I got twenty-four hours of music.
Some other interesting facts for my own personal future reference:
Longest song: Fly On The Wall – The Beatles – Let It Be… Naked – twenty-two minutes
Shortest song: Speech: Paul – The Beatles – Anthology 1 – seven seconds
Amount of songs on iPod dating from after 1980: 45 – mostly live renditions of songs written before 1980.
Song listened to the most: Rock and Roll – Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin IV

Songs That Should (But Won’t) Be in the Beatles: Rock Band

May 10th, 2009

The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill
Why It Should Be In: First of all this song features one of the coolest, fastest riffs as its intro. It would be very challenging to play that Guitar-Hero style. Also, most Guitar Hero/Rock Band games feature songs by girl bands so the game appeals to both genders. This is the only Beatles song to feature female lead vocal (even if it’s just for one line).
Why It Won’t Be In: This song is pretty obscure; you don’t see it on a lot of “greatest Beatles songs” lists. Also, apart from the intro, the only thing the lead guitar does is strumming.

Because
Why It Should Be In: This song is actually played primarily on an organ, but it can transfer over for Rock Band. It features really cool three-part harmony; I’ve read that some releases of the Beatles: Rock Band will come with three USB microphones to utilize all those notable Beatle harmonies. (Also notable: the Wii only has two USB ports, and yet three USB microphones will be packaged with the game.)
Why It Won’t Be In: This song features no drum track or bass track, and a second guitar could be added (since there actually is one in the recording), but it would only be playing the exact same thing as the first guitar.

Within You Without You
Why It Should Be In: They should’ve hired me to work on the development of this game because I have a really cool idea on this one: the entire song is built on a droning C-note on a sitar and occasionally the sitar plays little riffs, plays in unison with the vocals, and there’s even a solo in there. For the game, the player would have to hold down the green button throughout the entire song while the other four buttons would work out the rest of the song. It would probably be one of the more challenging songs in the game.
Why It Won’t Be In: This song doesn’t actually feature a guitar. (They should really bundle a sitar controller for this game.) Also, it doesn’t have enough consumer appeal; it’s not really the kind of song someone whistles to themself on the subway. Plus the lyrics are kind of deep. The only Beatle who actually plays on this track is George Harrison; they’d have to animate sixteen little computer animated session musicians. Last of all, it would be difficult to somehow morph the tabla percussion part into a playable form on the Rock Band drum kit.

Revolution 9
Why It Should Be In: In Guitar Hero: World Tour, during the guitar breaks the lead vocalist could do whatever they want into the mic without losing points. That’s the kind of thing I’m thinking with Revolution 9, only every instrument can do whatever they want for eight minutes. This would make a good bonus track.
Why It Won’t Be In: Number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine.

List of Simpsons Quotes I Use Daily

May 7th, 2009

Shoulda, but didn’t.” – Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel. I say this almost every time somebody says the word “should’ve.” Original context: This quote originates from “The Twisted World of Marge Simpson” where Cletus gets 300 free pretzels thanks to 300 free-pretzel coupons. Marge says, “Hmm… I should’ve put, ‘Limit one per customer’” and Cletus says in his southern tone, “Shoulda, but didn’t.” Example: “I should’ve washed the dog.” “Shoulda, but didn’t.”

“Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is: never try.” – Homer. I use this quote any time I or someone around me fails at something. Original context: This quote is from “Burns’ Heir” when neither Bart or Lisa were chosen as Burns’ heir. Example: “I can’t believe I just got last place in the 100-meter dash.” “The lesson is: never try.”

Money can be exchanged for goods and services.” – Homer’s Brain. I say this quote every time I go shopping. Original context: Homer wants peanuts but instead finds a twenty dollar bill. His brain explains a simple form of how the economy works.

I bet I’ll get blamed for this.” – Mayor Quimby. Original context: After Mayor Quimby makes jokes about the French’s resemblance to frogs, they launch a nuclear warhead at Springfield. Seeing the warhead go by his office window, Quimby says this line. Example: I would say this line if I am obviously at fault for something such as knocking an expensive vase onto the floor or deleting the computer’s hard drive.
