The Writers Strike - Do I Care?

Monday, November 5th, 2007

The simple, short answer is "no."
The long answer is still "no" but there's more. All of the best shows have already been made. Right now I'm watching Who's the Boss. It's not so good but I'm watching it because Chuck just got over and I don't know what else to watch. I couldn't tell you what it's about, but you know, it passes for good TV. Look at the past of television: The Dick Van Dyke Show, Full House, Urkel, I Love Lucy, the Charlie Brown Christmas Special, Friends, Boy Meets World, Simpsons Seasons 1-10, It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, Everybody Loves Raymond and more. Now look at the present time of television: The Office, The Simpsons Season 11-19 (excluding 12 which was kind of an "off year"), Chuck and King of the Hill. See? Most of the best shows are no longer on.
Plus, I don't think that the writers strike will really affect anyone except the writers. Think about it. First of all, the Simpsons writers, animators and producers work so far ahead since it's animation that it's quite possible that they've already created the entire nineteenth season (which is awesome so far). I heard that the average time it takes from the creation of an episode to airdate on the Simpsons is nine to eleven months.
Now, the Office has signed for a whopping thirty episodes this year. It's in their contracts. They best not be breakin' those. So when the writers get back to work they're just going to have to work themselves extra hard to make up for lost time.
I guess I do sort of care about the strike in that all the late night shows will be reruns but that's about it.
